Applications received after 4 December 2017 will  be considered by the Board in 2018.

The Otto Mønsted Foundation’s main purpose is to contribute to “the development of Denmark’s trade and industry.”

The Foundation does NOT grant funds for:

  • pensions
  • general support
  • rewards to individuals
  • group travel for students
  • bachelor-degree students at business schools
  • MBA/e-MBA programmes
  • PhD programmes

The Foundation awards grants for the below purposes:

The following sums up the conditions, information and documents requested by the Foundation for the individual purposes.

1. Periods of study or practical training qualifying for credit of at least three months, taken abroad, for engineering students enrolled at DTU and AAU as well as students enrolled in an MSc Economics and Business Administration programme at CBS. Grant: 10.000 kr.
Application period: 10 January to 1 March. 

2. NEW: Projektsamarbejde i udlandet mellem CBS- og DTU studerende/Project Cooperation abroad between CBS and DTU students.

Students from DTU and CBS who go to another country to carry out a project together will be able to obtain a grant of DKK 15,000 each.
Application period: 10 January to 1 March

3. Conference participation abroad for employed lecturers, PhD students, post docs, scientific staff and master’s/bachelor’s students from DTU, AAU (engineering programmes) and CBS.
Applicants must reside in Denmark.
Exchange students and external associate professors, - lectures guest-ph.d., guest-postdoc., visiting guest professors are not eligible for grants.
Support applications are restricted to participation in one conference per calendar year. 
The institution must support conference participation with minimum 50%.
The Foundation must have received the application and the required documents no less than 31 days before departure. 
Participation in conferences without a specific commercial or technical focus is not eligible for funding.

4. Research stays abroad of at least three months and only in special cases for more than 1 year for employed lecturers, PhD students, and post docs, as well as scientific staff from DTU, AAU (engineering programmes) and CBS.

The employment relationship must be unchanged during the stay abroad, ie to wages etc. must be the same before, during and after the stay abroad.


Exchange students and external associate professors, - lectures guest-ph.d., guest-postdoc., visiting guest professors are not eligible for grants.
The fund does not award grants for experiments etc. in connection with research stays. This means that these costs are not to be included as institutional support.

The Foundation must have received the application no less than two months before departure. 
It is a requirement for support from the Foundation that the institution contributes financially to the research stay – in addition to the salary.
The Foundations grant cannot exceed the institutions support, and only in exceptional circumstances will the amount granted exceed 5,000 kr. a month.
The Board appreciates any attempts to sub-let the residence in Denmark in order to reduce the budget balance. If sub-letting is not possible, an explanation for this is also appreciated.

5. Foreign visiting professorships at DTU and CBS. The institution concerned is responsible for recommending the departments’ applications for foreign visiting professorships to the Foundation.
Application period: mid-February to early June.
Notices of visiting professorships will be sent to the institutions by the end of February.

I can’t find the purpose for which I want to apply?

The purposes, foreign visiting professors and merit studies abroad are only available for a limited time. Read more at www.ottomoensted.dk

Are studies within Denmark eligible for grants?

No. The Otto Mønsted Foundation has focus on education abroad.

I am an engineering student, but not at DTU or AAU. Can I apply for a grant?

You have to study engineering at either DTU or AAU, in order to apply.

I am not a student at CBS but do study MSc EBA. Can I apply for a grant?

You have to be a student at CBS, in order to apply.

I want to take a full Master’s degree abroad. Can I apply for a grant?

No, the Foundation awards grants for studies abroad as part of an education at CBS, DTU or AAU (engineering programs).

I am a foreign citizen; can I apply for a grant?

Yes, if you have a Danish social security number (Cpr).

I live in Sweden, but study/work at DTU/CBS/AAU (engineering programs) – can I apply for a grant?

Yes. However, the application must contain a Danish address including a Danish postal code. E.g. the educational institution’s address. The address is for tax purposes. However, travel grants are not taxable.

Can I apply for a grant regarding participation in a congress abroad, if there is less than 31 days to departure?

If the deadline has passed, the Foundation might still award grants in relation to participation in congresses abroad; E.g. visa issues. It will strengthen your application, if the educational institution has signed off on your reasoning.

Can I apply for a grant regarding a research stay abroad, if there is less than 2 months to departure?

If the deadline has passed, the Foundation, might still award grants in relation to a research stay abroad E.g. in case of visa issues. It will strengthen your application, if the educational institution has signed off on your reasoning.

Can I apply even if I have previously been awarded a grant?

Yes. However, we only award one such grant per calendar year regarding participation in conferences abroad.

When can I expect an answer?

Please have patience – it might take a while. You will receive an e-mail when we issue a decision.

Tax Questions

Is my travel grant subject to taxation?

No, grants for travels abroad are exempt from tax. The Foundation files the tax form using code 97, which states just that.

Why is the amount mentioned twice in my tax return?

The tax authorities indicate that the amount is neither subject to labour market contribution nor to income tax.
